Poas Volcano Tour
Description
Poas Volcano and La Paz waterfalls is one of the best tours King Tours offer from Los Suenos and Jaco beach, getting there you enjoy the winding roads full of coffee and flower farms.
With well-maintained trails, roads and lookout points this is one the most visited Volcanoes by families in Costa Rica because of the ease of accessibility. There are 2 crater lakes, although the lakes are home to virtually no species because of the acidity levels. They are rain-fed, sulphuric pools that still bubble and emit smoke into the air.
Poas Volcano has erupted 39 times since 1828. In Poas Volcano National park there are 79 species of birds including the robin, the hummingbird and the spectacular quetzal. Among the mammals found here, are the coyotes, long-tailed weasels, skunks and some small felines.
Hot geysers are frequent resulting in heated rocks on the floor of the volcano expanding and contracting to form underground chambers. Moisture from rain sinks down through these cracks and becomes trapped. Geothermal heat evaporates underground water and creates pressurized steam bursting through the rock throwing plumes of mud and debris. Some of these spectacular explosions are as high as 800 feet.
Our tour combines the visit to La Paz Waterfalls Gardens that makes this tour unique. The La Paz Waterfall Gardens are located on the slopes of the Poas Volcano, this area allows both cloud and rainforest to co-exist because of the elevation of 4,000-5,000 feet.
La Paz Waterfall Gardens
The second part of the tour commences with lunch at La Paz Waterfall Gardens. Named for the five waterfalls it contains, this park boasts a number of trails and educational exhibits you won’t want to miss, including:
- Butterfly Observatory
- Aviary
- Trout Lake
- Ranarium
- Serpentarium
At La Paz Waterfall Gardens be prepared to experience the largest butterfly observatory in the world (the length of a football field) where butterflies fly freely, hummingbird gardens, serpentarium, frog pond and 5 majestic waterfalls. The serpentarium is home to 30 different species of snakes found all over Costa Rica.
La Paz has 3 kilometers of paved trails that wrap around the 5 waterfalls, each with their own platform to view and refresh in the mist from the waterfalls.
