La Fortuna commonly referred to as La Fortuna de San Carlos is a district in the province of Alajuela, Costa Rica. La Fortuna is Spanish for “The Fortune”, many mistakenly believe this name came from the shooting of lava from the Arenal Volcano. The name La Fortuna is actually derived from the fertile agricultural land surrounding the area.

La Fortuna was once a very quiet farming village until the 1968 eruptions of the Arenal Volcano, this was a devastation to the country causing extensive damage and 82 casualties. Thankfully the town of La Fortuna was not affected and since has become a must on all travellers list. Everyone wanted a picture of the Volcano spewing hot lava as they looked on from the hot spring pools below.
