Monteverde is a town in mountainous northwestern Costa Rica. It's renowned for its biodiverse forests in the clouds. The famous Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve shelters countless wildlife species, including jaguars, ocelots and the colourfully plumed resplendent quetzal. Monteverde is considered to be one of the most popular ecotourism destinations in Costa Rica. Monteverde sits 4600 feet above sea level, so keep in mind when travelling in this area that it is often windy, rainy and misty with an average temperature of only 18°C (64°F).
In the early 1950s, a group of Quakers from the United States left their homes in Alabama and arrived in Monteverde at a time when the region was just beginning to be settled. The Quakers, fleeing the United States to avoid being drafted into the Korean War, established a simple life in Monteverde based on dairy and cheese production. Some of these families helped establish the Monteverde and Santa Elena Cloud Forest Reserves some 20 years later.
