Poas Volcano Tours
Description
This tour takes you across coffee plantations to Poas Volcano, into the heart of artisan workshops in the town of Sarchi as well as the Doka Estate where you will learn about coffee production stages and how the perfect bean makes a fabulous cup of Coffee.
Poas Volcano is a powerful symbol of the geothermal forces that formed Costa Rica. When the mist and clouds part you will see the sulfuric, bubbling, green rain fed lake at the bottom, surrounded by smoke and steam rising from fumaroles. Water from the lake is constantly seeping through cracks in the hot rock, evaporating and building pockets of steam. Poas Volcano National Park is one of the most visited National Parks in Costa Rica due to the ease of accessibility.
We will take a light hike on the trails that lead through the cloud forest to Lake Botos. Lake Botos fills an extinct crater at the end of the trail, and is home to many cloud forest birds including hummingbirds, tanagers, flycatchers, toucanets, Costa Rica’s national bird the clay-colored robin, and the area’s most famous avian resident, the resplendent quetzal.
We continue to the small artisan town of Sarchi. Well known for the production of the Oxcart, a National Symbol of Costa Rica. The Oxcart has been used for centuries to haul coffee beans from plantations and are hand designed, hand carved and colourfully painted. Widely found throughout town are dozens of souvenir shops that sell everything from beautifully decorated bowls and trays to intricately carved wooden utensils, jewelry and masks. Also typical to Costa Rica you will find many stores with hand carved tables, chairs and other furniture accessories.
We continue to Grecia where we visit some of the most beautiful churches made from metal. We conclude our visit by visiting the Central Market, a market full of local treasures.
